Jan Švankmajer’s Faust (1994) is based on an imaginative and free interpretation of the classic myth. The protagonist of the surrealist movie is an everyman who wanders through the city of Prague into a devilish play. The dark humoured movie is an original combination of live-action footage, puppetry and claymation.
Jan Švankmajer is known especially for his animations and features of which he already had decades long career while directing Faust. His unique style and the diversity of techniques go hand-in-hand with the movie’s themes of magic and manipulation.
Faust is screened with support from Suomi-Tšekki-seura.
